ARREST DIVERSION PROGRAM

Since 2010, Safe Schools has worked in partnership with the City of Utica Police Department and the Utica City School District to offer an arrest diversion program for school based arrests that happen on school campus for both juveniles and 16-18 year old offenders.

Starting in 2018 we are now offering the program to 16-18 year olds who commit specific criminal acts in the City of Utica.  We are currently partnering with the Oneida County Probation Department, Utica Police Department, Oneida County DSS and Oneida County Mental Health as well as the Utica City School District on this project.

Using the principles of Restorative Justice, the program focuses on diverting the young person from initial arrest to keep them from further penetration into the criminal justice system while also working to make the victim whole.

In 2012, the program was independently evaluated by SUNY Albany and was labeled as "Promising approach to reducing the school to prison pipeline."

To date over 152 youth have gone through the program with an astounding 92% completion rate while also not reoffending!
